I recently returned from a week – with my husband and two daughters (ages 10 and 13) – at an all-inclusive resort in Playa Mujeres, just north of Cancun, Mexico. We’ve been traveling to Mexico for the last 15 years, so this was not our first time checking into an all-inclusive. And really, it’s all about finding the resort that’s right for you. Luckily, we’ve had the opportunity to try many brands, and with each stay, we continue to appreciate what these resorts have to offer.

Who doesn’t want to receive special treatment while on vacation? All-inclusive offer butler service, in-room refrigerators stocked with all your favorite beverages and snacks, nightly turndown service, a personal concierge, and 24-hour room service. At an all-inclusive resort, everything really is included. All-inclusive does not mean buffet only! And don’t forget to pair your meal with a signature cocktail or drink. Today, resorts offer premium wines, top-shelf liquor, and specialty drinks as well as a large menu of non-alcoholic drinks and smoothies. Don’t worry about asking them to make your favorite drink. If they have the right ingredients, and they usually do, the bartender can make that Mai Thai, Moscow Mule or pour a glass of Pinot Gris to assuage your palate.

No matter your interests, most resorts are in or near a popular destination that provides guests with opportunities to experience the local culture. Whether its exploring Mayan ruins in Tulum, Mexico; taking a zip line and ATV tour in Costa Rica; or swimming with whale sharks in Seychelles, your resort will have a list of the must-see attractions. Most resorts offer a variety of tours you can book on-site that include transportation to and from the venue.

Feel Safe
“Are resorts safe?” People ask me this question often, and I can say that I’ve never felt unsafe at a resort. Staff is meticulous about tracking everyone that enters their resort, not only guests but taxi drivers and tour operators, too. Of course, no matter where you travel, use common sense and don’t overindulge when drinking alcohol. A good rule of thumb is to always let your travel companion(s) know when you’re leaving the resort and where you’re going. Resort staff will do all they can to keep guests safe, but you must do your part, too.
All of these are reasons why I believe staying at an all-inclusive is one of the best vacations a couple or family can take. And if you haven’t checked into one, I encourage you to try it for your next vacay. Trust me… you won’t regret it!
